Tournament Rules 2017

All C.H.A. and N.S.S.A.F. rules apply.
 

  1. All suspensions will follow the NSSAF handbook suspension durations. Details can be found at: http://www.nssaf.ca/2017-18-handbook
  2. Match penalty or gross misconduct: The player is suspended from the tournament (at least).
  3. Any coach or team official who, in the opinion of the Tournament Committee, displays poor sportsmanship or a bad example shall be suspended from the tournament.
  4. No protests shall be entertained.
  5. The coach shall have his team in the arena at least 45 minutes before game time. If program is running ahead of schedule, game time may be advanced a maximum of 30 minutes.
  6. Any team that does not show for a game will lose by default by a score of 5 – 0.
  7. All male games will be two 15 minute stop-time periods and the third will be 20 minutes stop-time. After warm-up, the ice will be flooded prior to the 1st period of play and again after the 2nd period. All female games will be three 15 minute stop-time periods. There will be a flood every 2 periods (after the 2nd period one game, then after 1st period during the next game). Male division will have a 10 minute warm-up and female games will have a 5 minute warm-up. Pucks will be provided by the tournament.
  8. Each team is guaranteed three games. A win is worth 2 points, a tie is worth 1 point, an overtime win is worth 2 points and an overtime loss is worth 1 point.
  9. During round-robin play, if a game is tied at the end of regulation play, the teams will play one five-minute sudden victory overtime period (stop time) with each team having 3 skaters (3-3). In the event of a penalty, teams will play 4-3. A second penalty against the same team will result in teams playing 5-3. At the whistle following expiration of penalties, play returns to 3-3. If the game is still tied after the overtime period, the tie will remain.
  10. Proof of age must be available upon request by the Tournament Committee for any or all players during the tournament. High School – The age limit for all student-athletes is UNDER 19 YEARS as of September 30th of the current school year.
  11. This year’s tournaments consist of 8 teams in 2 divisions. Teams will play round robin games within their division. The top 2 teams in each division will play in the crossover games. Tournament committee will determine which teams play in first and second crossover games. Game will be scheduled to give teams the most time between round robin and crossover games.
  12. At the end of round robin play: To determine seeding, if two or more teams are tied in points, the tie will be broken using the following system in the given order.
    • The win-loss record of the teams in games against each other.
    • If still tied, the team with the highest +/- in goals from all games played finishes higher
    • If still tied, the team scoring the most goals in all games played shall finish higher
    • If still tied, the team with the least penalty minutes in all games played (note: Misconduct, Game Misconduct, Match, and Gross Misconduct represent a 10 minute penalty).
    • Finally, if all else fails, a coin flip will determine the winner.
  13. During crossover and championship games, a winner must be declared. If one of these games is tied at the end of regulation play:
    • Play one five-minute overtime period with each team having 4 skaters (4-4). In the event of a penalty, teams will play 4-3. A second penalty against the same team will result in teams playing 5-3. At the whistle following expiration of penalties, play returns to 4-4.
    • Play one 5-minute overtime period with each team having 3 skaters (3-3). In the event of a penalty, teams will play 4-3. A second penalty against the same team will result in teams playing 5-3. At the whistle following expiration of penalties, play returns to 3-3.
    • If there is enough time remaining, the tournament committee will allow 3-on-3 periods to continue, otherwise:
      1. A shootout consisting of 3 shooters per team. Teams must use all available players during the shootout before reusing a player. Any player serving a minor penalty at the end of regulation time shall be permitted to participate in the shootout. A player serving a major or misconduct penalty shall not be eligible for the shootout.
    • Team will not switch ends between these periods and ice will not be resurfaced unless the tournament committee decides it is necessary.
  14. During round robin play only: in the event one team is leading by 5 goals or more at any time in the third period, time will revert to straight running time and DOES NOT revert back to stop time until the goal differential becomes 2. During straight time, minor penalties will be 3 minutes in length and will begin at the drop of the puck. If a penalty expires during a stoppage of play, the player will leave the box at the next puck drop.
  15. Each team will be entitled to one 30 second time out during each game (all tournament games). Note that both teams may take their respective time-outs during the same stoppage of play. However, once a team has called their time-out, the second team must indicate their intentions to take a time-out during the same stoppage of play before the initial 30 seconds are over (Hockey Canada rule 10.17(f)).
  16. Tournament Committee decisions are final.
